Install ceiling insulation: A beginner's guide.

Installing ceiling insulation is a great way to improve your home’s energy efficiency. You can install roof installation batts yourself or hire a professional. However, before you start, read our guide on installing insulation in the ceiling properly, starting with your cleaning roof cavity to get the best results.

New Homes vs Existing Homes (Sydney Insulation)

Install ceiling insulation after plaster and drop the bats into the space between roof beams. Insulate hard to reach areas before plaster, like corners. Watch our video on how to install ceiling insulation before plaster.

Under floor Insulation - Should I Insulate the Ceiling Between Floors?

Insulating under floor in your mid-floor area reduces heat flow in floor insulation, increases energy efficiency and reduces noise transfer between floors in multi-storey homes. Consider using specialised acoustic insulation products for the mid-floor area for improved sound absorption.

How Much Insulation Material Do I Need?

Before insulating your space, calculate how much insulation material you need to avoid delays or added costs for installing insulation. Divide the space’s square footage by the insulation bag’s square footage, then subtract 10% for the framing.

Can I Install Ceiling Insulation Myself?

DIY insulation can save on costs, but research is crucial. Poor installation of insulation lowers effectiveness. Hire a professional installer for quicker, higher-standard work. Get product recommendations tailored to your house and location.

Get Prepared, Gather Your Tools, Install the Batts

To insulate your ceiling, use a utility knife, safety glasses, dust mask, gloves and a long stick to reach difficult areas. Consider using a kneeling board for comfort. Preload batts into the ceiling first to speed up the process. Start from the farthest point and work backward, aiming for a snug fit and even height. Trim insulation as needed and save cut-offs to fill gaps.

What Type of Ceiling Insulation is Best?

Glasswool and polyester batt insulation are two of the most popular and effective ceiling insulation products available.

Batt Insulation

Use glasswool ceiling batts for thermal performance and DIY projects. Choose acoustic ceiling batts to reduce noise for a peaceful indoor environment.

Polyester Ceiling Batts

Polyester ceiling batts, made from recycled plastic, have no itch factor and are non-allergenic. They fit most Aussie ceilings and are a good choice for those with asthma or dust allergies as they contain no breathable particles.

What’s the Best R Value for Ceiling Insulation?

Consider R-Value when buying insulation material. A higher R-Value slows down heat transfer. Get R4.0 in warmer areas and R5.0 or R6.0 in cooler ones for greater energy savings. Insulation batts come pre-cut to fit most Australian homes, and different R-Values vary in thickness.

Aussie Roof Vac helped me insulate a semi-detached terrace with limited access and pokey corners. Andrew was local and great, coming out to have a look and understand the issues before quoting, unlike others. The price was good, better than others - and the vacuuming of old dust/loose fill and insulation of new earthwool batts was excellent. I would definitely recommend!
